The 2002 Illinois State AA Champions were one of the greatest baseball teams in Sandburg history! The Eagles finished the season with a 25-9 record, winning 15 of the last 17 games. As one of the local newspaper headlines stated, “The Sandburg Eagles will be remembered as one of the Southland’s greatest teams, a five-star production that displayed more character, courage, and drive than what would appear possible from a group of teenagers.”


The Eagles rolled through the state series defeating Mt Carmel in the super-sectionals 13-3.
Downstate they beat Glenbard West 9-1, Andrew 11-1 (5 innings), and Edwardsville in the championship game 5-0. The championship game was highlighted by Dan Atkenson’s complete game 1 hitter.
