Coach Jim Frye. Jim was an All-State performer in both basketball and track while at Homewood-Flossmoor High School. He went on to the University of North Carolina competing in both basketball and track. Jim was a member of two Final Four basketball teams at UNC
finishing fourth in 1967 and second in 1968.
Following college, Jim coached and taught for 36 years with 27 of those at Sandburg. At Sandburg he coached boys and girls cross-country, boys basketball and boys track. He taught PE for seven years and was in the Deans’ office for twenty years.

The Sandburg Girls’ Cross- Country program began in 1977 with one girl. When Jim retired in 2004, 499 girls had gone through the program.

During his coaching career, among many accomplishments, Jim’s teams earned 7 Top 10 State finishes, including 2nd place in 1997 and 3rd place in 2002.

Jim is a member of the Homewood-Flossmoor Athletic Hall of Fame and the Illinois Track and Cross-Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
