Lukas Verzbicas

Boys Cross Country • Boys Track & Field
Year: 2022-23

Lukas Verzbicas joined the Eagles his sophomore year having already been a 2 time high school national track champion as well as North American junior triathlon champion. At Sandburg, Lukas found the ideal high school to continue his education while balancing training and competing at the professional level. In his first cross country season with the Eagles, Lukas won the state title and went on to become the first and only high school boys sophomore cross country national champion. He spent the rest of year competing in triathlon, culminating in a 4th place finish as a junior in the triathlon world championship.

Lukas took extra classes to graduate 1 year early while starting what would be his senior year cross country season. He won his second individual state title, leading the Eagles to a top 10 team finish. He topped off his senior cross country year with 2 more high school national titles. Lukas never lost a high school cross country race, ending with a perfect record.

During the 2011 High School Indoor Track National Championship Lukas became the only athlete to win the Mile, 2 Mile, and 5000 Meter events in one championship; winning Sandburg the national team title in the process. Lukas finished his senior outdoor track season with a national record in the 2 Mile (8:29) that still stands to this day, and becoming just the 5th high schooler to run a sub-4 minute mile (3:59). By the time he graduated; Lukas won 2 state championships, 8 national championships and 2 national records.

Following his time at Sandburg, Lukas went on to win the world junior triathlon championship. After a brief time running for the University of Oregon, Lukas turned to a professional triathlete. The following year he became the youngest men's triathlon world cup winner just months before the 2012 Olympic Games. It was then that Lukas was involved in a career ending bicycle accident while training. The sustained injury left him paralyzed from the waist down, but after months of intensive surgeries and therapy he walked out of the hospital to begin training again. While he didn't make a total recovery to his former physical shape, Lukas competed as a professional triathlete throughout the world for the next 5 years.

Today, Lukas works in the financial industry as a proprietary derivatives trader. He has recently relocated back to IL and lives in the southwest suburbs. Lukas volunteers at his local church and community events, and has begun mentoring youth runners. He feels honored to be included in Sandburg's Athletic Hall of Fame and wants to highlight that his high school accomplishments would not have been possible without the teammates, coaches, staff and community from Sandburg.
