1998 Girls Volleyball

Hall of Fame
Year: 2019-20

Led by Head Coach Joann Holverson, assisted by Jeff Krohn and Lori Wierzal, the 1998 Girls Volleyball team became the first and only Carl Sandburg IHSA Girls Volleyball State Champions. The Lady Eagles defeated two undefeated teams in the state playoffs, conquering undefeated Naperville Central in an intense late-night match 15-10, 14-16, 15-12, for the title. Two State title game records (Erika Lange, 24 kills), (Stephanie Brandys, 45 Assists) were set in the match. Not only did they earn the Championship, they were the very first team, in any Sandburg girls sport, to win a state title.

Playing one of the toughest schedules in the state, the Eagles finished the season with a record of 36-5. Season highlights included wins over nationally ranked Assumption (Kentucky) and Mother McAuley (twice). Best known for their defense, serving and net dominance, this charismatic and talented team displayed grit, heart, discipline, an unselfish attitude and a fierce work ethic. Well balanced with a different hero each match, these exemplary women had outstanding chemistry, never giving up on any play or each other. They were truly a dream team.

The Eagles were led by Seniors Stephanie Brandys, Katie Engel, Megan McDonough, Amy McMahon, Caryn Pehr, Annie Raggio, and Juniors/Sophomores Kelly Anderson, Mary Cassidy, Lindsay DeAdam, Nicole Kwasigroh, Erik Lange, Kim Melinauskas, Sarah Kustok, Anneliese Williams, and Jenny Yarmoska.

The Sandburg girls volleyball teams have been in the final 4 four times, finishing second in 1981-1982 and 2001-2002, and third in 1980-1982, but the 1998 team remains the only one to bring the title trophy home.
