COACH DOUG SUTOR’S BASEBALL BIOGRAPHY
Doug Sutor is a proud product of District 230. He graduated from Stagg High School in 1973. He
lettered in football, basketball, and baseball all four years. As a senior he was an All-Conference and
All-Area selection in all three sports and received Stagg’s Most Valuable Athlete Award.
After graduation, Doug attended Lake Forest College. His athletic success continued as he lettered in
football and basketball. Doug was an All-Conference tight end his senior year and signed a free-agent
contract with the Oakland Raiders. He also played for the Chicago Fire of the AFL. In 2007, Lake Forest
College inducted Doug into their Athletic Hall of Fame.
Doug began his teaching and coaching career at Sandburg in 1977 and remained there until he retired
in 2011, with his final thirty-two years as the Head Dean of Students.
Doug coached his entire tenure at Sandburg including ten years in the football program along with
thirty-four years in the baseball program. After ten years as an assistant, Doug became the Head
Baseball Coach in 1989 and remained at the helm until his retirement.
During the 23 years under his leadership, Doug turned the program into a perennial state contender.
He spent countless hours transforming the baseball field and facilities into something the school and his
players could take pride in.
Doug’s coaching career record was 574 wins—226 losses. That’s a little over a 71% winning
percentage. During those seasons, Doug’s teams won an average of 24 games per year.
They won:
* 11 Conference Championships
* 13 Regional Championships (including his last ten years in a row)
* 7 Sectional Championships
* 3 Elite 8 State Final Appearances
* Summer League State Championship in 2007
* State AA Championship in 2002
Doug has been awarded numerous Coach of the Year honors including:
* 4-time Regional News
* Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association 3 times
* Professional Baseball’s “Pitch-And Hit Club of Chicago’s” High School Coach of the
Year
The Illinois High School Baseball Association inducted Doug into their Hall of Fame in 2005.
Doug was also inducted into District 230’s Legacy Hall of Fame in 2014.
To this day, Doug continues to coach high school baseball, serving as an assistant coach to to his son
Derek, who, like his Dad, has become a high school teacher and coach. After six seasons at Geneva
High School, Doug will join Derek’s staff as a varsity assistant coach as Derek begins his first season as
the head coach at St. Charles East High School.
This will be Doug’s 41st year of coaching high school baseball.
