Sara (Olson) Wojanis

Sara was a 4-year varsity starter for the Carl Sandburg Softball Team from 2004-2007. Three of her four years, she led the Eagles to the Class AA IHSA State Softball Tournament; winning the SWSC Conference Championship in 2006 & 2007 and finishing 3rd in the state in 2006. Senior year, as a pitcher, Sara was 24-3 with a 0.24 earned-run average, with 17 shut-outs and nearly 11 strikeouts per game. With her bat, she hit .425 with 48 hits, 41 RBIs, and 14 homeruns. Sara finished her career at Sandburg breaking and holding many school records including homeruns, slugging percentage, pitching wins, shutouts, strikeouts in a season, and ERA. During her four years, she was recurrently named All-Conference, All-Area, First Team All-State, and Player of the Year by multiple media publications, along with EA Sports First Team All American High School Softball. In the classroom, Sara was a member of the National Honors Society, Varsity Club Leader, First Class Leadership Program, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes – FCA.

Sara continued her career at Indiana University, where she played for the Hoosiers from 2008-2011. Her Senior year, she led the team to the post season regionals, starting all 55 games with an overall record of 37-18, 17-3 Big-Ten. Sara led the Big Ten in conference play with a .667 on base-percentage, a 1.392 OPS, 12 HBP, and a 4th best overall .425 batting average. She led the Hoosiers in overall batting average, home runs, RBI, doubles, walks, and HBP. Over her tenure she earned numerous achievements including: Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Midwest Region First Team (2011), First Team All Big Ten (2011), Big Ten Player of the Week (2011), Big Ten Sportsmanship Award (2011), CoSida Academic All-District First Team (2011) and Second Team (2010), Third Team All Big Ten (2009), 4 time NFCA Scholar Athlete, 4 time Academic All Big Ten, IU Team Co-MVP and Co-Captain (2011), IU Team Pitcher of the Year (2009), and she appeared in ESPN Sports Illustrated Magazine’s Faces in the Crowd (2008). Her most outstanding on field performance came her senior year, going an astounding 3-3 with two home runs, both off All-American pitcher Jordan Taylor and accounting for all five RBI in a 5-4 win in eight innings at #3 ranked Michigan, IU’s first victory over Michigan since 1996 and the first win in Ann Arbor since 1993. Off the field, Sara was part of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Alpha Beta, and FCA. She finished her IU career tied for 5th in career homeruns, 6th on the IU career RBI list, and was awarded the most prestigious award, The Spirit of Indiana Female Athlete of the Year.

After her playing career, Sara stayed on as a member of the IU Softball Staff as she finished her degree and served as a 5th Year Student-Volunteer Assistant Coach. After graduating in 2012 from IU with a Bachelor's of Science in Sport Administration and Management, she was offered the Assistant Coaching position at Boston College. As an Assistant Coach for the 2013 season she was responsible for the pitching staff, hitting, game leadership, skills training, recruiting, and game & video analysis.

Upon returning home to Orland Park, Sara came back to work for her grandfather at Norman G. Olson Insurance Agency, Inc. She is honored to be third generation working alongside her family and continuing to grow the business her grandpa started 62 years ago. In September 2018, she began the next chapter of her life and was married to Steven Wojanis. Sara continues to give back to the sport that she loves and that awarded her so much by coaching and mentoring young softball players throughout the Chicagoland area.
